our story

The Moore Architecture story began in the 1960’s in Lynchburg, VA when founding Principal Kelvin L. Moore first discovered the power of design. Kelvin’s father Robert Moore was a master brick mason who went to masonry trade school at North Carolina A & T State University, during an era where African-American access to education and professional job opportunities was sparse, so the word Architect did not even exist in his lexicon. One rainy day, Kelvin came home from elementary school and had an epiphany, his pet dog deserved better living conditions. With the leftover scrap materials from his father’s jobsite, Kelvin built his dog a new house. Armed with this newfound knowledge, Kelvin decided he wanted to design buildings to improve not only his dog’s quality of life, but humanity’s. As one of the top students in his class, Kelvin went on to study Architecture at the University of Virginia and then became a licensed Architect, gaining valuable experience while working with various firms.

In 1992, Kelvin decided it was time to open his own business to specifically target representation to underserved communities. The Moore Architecture story got very interesting when Kelvin had twin sons, both of which also decided to pursue Architecture. Marques L. Moore and his brother followed in their father’s footsteps and both studied Architecture at the University of Virginia and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and are licensed Architects as well. Marques practices Architecture in North Carolina and South Carolina while his brother practices Architecture in Georgia. Moore Architecture opened an additional office in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2012. The Moore Architecture legacy continues as Kelvin’s grandchildren have also expressed interest in continuing the family business.
